FAQs

SHOULD I SIGN UP FOR A BREASTFEEDING MEDICINE CONSULT OR A 4TH TRIMESTER PACKAGE? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

WHAT IS BREASTFEEDING MEDICINE?

Breastfeeding is not always easy.  In fact, most parents encounter some problems along their breastfeeding journeys.  Breastfeeding Medicine is a niche within medicine that addresses all sorts of breastfeeding issues, from latching to low supply, and even inducing lactation.  General lactation assistance is included in any In Touch Pediatrics general membership, but can also be provided a la carte as Lactation Consults.  Please see “Lactation Consults and Breastfeeding Medicine” for more information.

AT WHAT HOSPITALS DOES DR. RUBIN MAINTAIN PRIVILEGES?

Dr. Rubin is not on staff at any hospitals, but from her years of practice has relationships with neighboring physicians and hospitals.  If your child needs to be hospitalized, Dr. Rubin will keep in touch with your care team and her ability to provide close follow-up may help get your child discharged earlier than typical.

MY CHILD IS HEALTHY.  DOES IT MAKE SENSE FOR ME TO ENROLL IN THE PRACTICE?

WHAT HAPPENS IF DR. RUBIN GOES ON VACATION OR HAS A FAMILY EMERGENCY?  WHO WILL TAKE CARE OF MY CHILD IF WE HAVE AN URGENT HEALTH ISSUE?

IS IN TOUCH PEDIATRICS 24/7 ACCESS TO MY DOCTOR?

As a member of In Touch Pediatrics, you will have direct access to Dr. Rubin.  She will be easily reachable for non-urgent matters during business hours via text, e-mail, or phone (generally between 9am-4pm Monday through Thursday).  She is also available for urgent matters after hours and can help determine whether your child should go to the Emergency Room any time of day or night.  She does have a family and is a one-woman show, though, so she may not address non-urgent questions or requests until the next business day.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD HAS AN EMERGENCY?  WILL DR. RUBIN BE ABLE TO CARE FOR MY CHILD?

When you join In Touch Pediatrics, you will have direct access to Dr. Rubin for urgencies and some emergencies, including strep tests, simple suturing, and wound care.  There may be times, though, when Dr. Rubin feels your child will be safest in an emergency room or hospital and she will refer you there.

MY CHILDREN ARE COVERED UNDER ILLINOIS MEDICAID.  CAN THEY STILL JOIN THE PRACTICE?

Absolutely!  Dr. Rubin is a referring, ordering and prescribing physician for Illinois Medicaid.  While she is not part of any specific Medicaid plan or HMO and patients cannot be assigned to her as their PCP, she is still able to see them as paying members of her practice (not covered), and she is able to order medications, labwork, and imaging that can be covered by Medicaid, and refer you to specialists if needed.  Medicaid patients can pay cash for vaccines with In Touch Pediatrics, or have the option to get their vaccines at their local health department.

DO I HAVE TO HAVE INSURANCE IF I JOIN IN TOUCH PEDIATRICS?

It is highly recommended that you maintain health insurance for your child in addition to your membership.  Your insurance will help cover the costs of care received outside of In Touch Pediatrics - Emergency Room visits, hospitalization, or specialist referrals.  It will likely help to cover the cost of vaccines, labs, and radiology imaging.

HOW DO I PAY THE MEMBERSHIP FEE?  DOES IN TOUCH PEDIATRICS TAKE MY HSA/FSA CARD?

In Touch Pediatrics will charge you using Stripe via our Electronic Medical Record, AeroDPC. Via Stripe, you can do bank transfer or credit card (bank transfer is preferred as it carries a smaller fee). You may also pay by cash or check if preferred.  You can receive a discount for paying for the year in full at sign-up.  Dr. Rubin will accept payment with an HSA/FSA card, but cannot guarantee that the membership fees will be covered through your health savings account.  We recommend you contact your FSA and HSA prior to using your card.

IS IN TOUCH PEDIATRICS IN-NETWORK FOR MY INSURANCE?

Dr. Rubin is not a member of any insurance plan.  That is good news - it means she can see your child no matter what insurance you carry! She can provide a Superbill or invoice for specific services that you can submit to your insurance, and she would be considered out-of-network for these.  Generally, insurance companies will not reimburse the monthly fees, but many will reimburse specific services at out-of-network rates.

IS THIS A CONCIERGE MEDICAL PRACTICE?

We get asked this question often. “Concierge” medicine is probably the closest thing that many people have heard of, but it’s not exactly the same the way our practice is set up. Dr. Rubin has thought long and hard about the care she wants to provide and how she can do it best. She has worked to come up with a payment model that is not out-of-reach for many families, and may actually be less expensive at the end of the year than obtaining primary care within the traditional insurance model when all is said and done. At the same time, she had to find a price point that allows her practice to remain sustainable as a physician, parent, and business-owner. Our practice offers many concierge-style services - direct access, home visits, personalized care - without the typical high concierge price tag. Some people have referred to Direct Primary Care as “concierge medicine for the everyman,” which sounds about right.

I ALREADY PAY A LOT FOR MY INSURANCE.  WHY WOULD I PAY A MEMBERSHIP FEE ALSO IN ORDER TO SEE MY PEDIATRICIAN?

WHAT IS A MEMBERSHIP-BASED PRACTICE?

A membership-based practice by definition does not accept insurance.  It instead charges a simple monthly membership fee that covers all physician services.  It is a great way to know your costs up front, and not have to worry about copays, deductibles, in-network vs. out-of-network, etc. See “Direct Primary Care” and “General Pediatrics” for more detailed information.
