What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implant technology has its roots in the same concepts that orthopedic surgeons have been using for decades with hip replacements. When a tooth is lost, a small, screw-like piece of titanium is surgically placed into the area of the missing tooth; often times, the implant placement procedure takes less time in the chair to complete than it would take to prepare a traditional crown! After a few months of healing (osseointegration), Dr. Markham will make a crown to be placed upon the dental implant, and your missing tooth will now be replaced.

Obviously if the tooth is in the front of your mouth, Dr. Markham will talk to you about temporary options while your implant heals – we do not expect you to walk around with a missing front tooth!

Sometimes, infection reaches the pulp of the tooth, due to deep decay, a fracture, or other dental problems. In order to save the tooth from an extraction, root canal therapy can sometimes be performed. During this procedure, the tissues inside the tooth are removed, and are replaced with high-quality dental materials. This process eliminates the source of infection and preserves normal function.
