Can Commercial Earbuds Be Transformed Into Hearing-Aids
Over-the-counter hearing aids have has transformed many lives earlier this year. But now it seems, regular commercial earbuds can work just as well as hearing aids. It’s none other than Apple that made this possible.
According to researchers, Apple's AirPods Pro meets four of the five criteria needed for a gadget to be classified as a personal sound amplification device.
AirPods Vs Hearing Aids
When it comes to cost efficiency, a pair of AirPods is lighter on the pocket. An over-the-counter hearing aid can cost up to $1500 whereas AirPods are $249.
When it came to aiding speech comprehension in a quiet setting, AirPods Pro performed on par with high-end hearing aids. The earbuds also worked effectively in a noisy setting, but only when the noises were coming from the side. The noises from the front did not improve people's hearing.
Will It Work For Severe Hearing Loss
The answer to this is sadly no but there’s always a possibility. For now, this is limited to people with minor hearing loss.
The data also suggests that one could need the assistance of a custom hearing aid to fit in more difficult listening conditions.
